Emergency services and members of the public have received praise for their swift actions in aiding those injured after a car plowed into a crowd in Liverpool on Monday evening.
The incident took place just after Liverpool FC’s Premier League victory parade had ended. A total of 27 people, including four children, were taken to hospital. Two individuals, one of them a child, sustained serious injuries.
During a press briefing on Monday night, Assistant Chief Constable Jenny Sims of Merseyside Police applauded the rapid response of emergency personnel and bystanders.
Speaking to the Daily Express, she said: “I want to express my gratitude to all emergency responders, partner agencies, and members of the public who assisted the injured following this distressing event, which was declared a major incident.
“What had been a joyful day with hundreds of thousands celebrating Liverpool FC’s triumph ended in tragedy. Several people required hospital treatment, and many more received care at the scene, though their injuries were not serious enough to warrant hospitalisation.”
Nick Searle, Chief Fire Officer of Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service, highlighted how fire crews quickly acted to free four individuals trapped beneath a vehicle, who were then handed over to paramedics for further care.
A 53-year-old man from the Liverpool area has been arrested in connection with the incident, and police believe he was the driver. Authorities have confirmed they are treating the event as an isolated case and not linked to terrorism.
