Liverpool FC Responds After Car Hits Fans During Premier League Celebration Parade
Liverpool FC has issued a statement following the arrest of a man who drove his vehicle into a group of supporters during the club’s open-top bus parade celebrating their Premier League title. The incident occurred around 6pm, with video footage circulating online showing fans being struck by a moving car.
Police have since confirmed that a 53-year-old white British man from the local area has been taken into custody. They urged the public to avoid speculation as investigations continue. The number of injuries has yet to be confirmed. In response, Liverpool condemned the incident and extended their sympathies to those impacted.
Club Statement Released
The celebrations marking Liverpool’s 20th league title were overshadowed by the disturbing event. In a message shared on their official website and social media, the club stated:
“We are in direct contact with Merseyside Police regarding the incident on Water Street, which occurred near the end of tonight’s trophy parade. Our thoughts and prayers are with those affected by this serious incident. We will continue to fully support emergency services and local authorities handling the situation.”
Liverpool’s local rivals, Everton, also expressed their concern, posting: “Our thoughts are with everyone affected by this serious incident in our city.”
British Prime Minister Keir Starmer commented as well, calling the scenes in Liverpool “appalling” and praising emergency services for their prompt response. He emphasized the importance of allowing police space to investigate the matter.
This tragedy follows a similar recent incident in Barcelona, where fans were struck outside the stadium during Espanyol’s defeat to the newly crowned champions.
Players and Clubs React
Former Liverpool defender and current Nottingham Forest player Neco Williams was among the first footballers to speak out, expressing his outrage on social media:
“What a scumbag! What was meant to be a special day for everyone associated with Liverpool FC—some animal went and ruined it. Prayers for everyone’s safety.”
Chelsea FC also posted a message of support, writing: “Everyone at Chelsea Football Club is thinking of Liverpool FC and those affected by today’s horrific events in the city.”
