An eyewitness has shared a harrowing account of a shocking incident that left several people injured during Liverpool’s Premier League title parade.
Massive crowds had gathered to celebrate Liverpool’s 20th league championship, marking a moment they missed out on in 2020 due to the pandemic.
However, celebrations took a dark turn on Monday evening when videos emerged showing a black car plowing into pedestrians on Water Street in the city centre.
Social media was soon flooded with images and reports, prompting Merseyside Police to release a statement confirming a man had been detained after a vehicle struck multiple people.
“We are currently responding to reports of a road traffic collision in Liverpool city centre,” the statement read.
“We were contacted shortly after 6pm today, Monday 26 May, following reports of a car colliding with several pedestrians on Water Street. The vehicle stopped at the scene and a male was taken into custody. Emergency services remain on site. More updates will be provided when available.”
Statements also came from the North West Ambulance Service, Liverpool City Council, and Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer.
Sky News interviewed Liverpool fan Natasha Rinaldi, who witnessed the disturbing scene from her friend’s apartment window.
“I was at my friend’s place, which is right where it happened,” she explained. “We were enjoying the parade from her window, having a great time. Then we suddenly heard desperate screams. We looked out and saw a car had hit people. A woman was on top of the car.
“People immediately tried to stop the driver and began attacking the vehicle. The police acted fast to contain the situation and hold people back.
“Some of my friends were right near where it happened. It was terrifying.”
Authorities have not yet confirmed the number of people injured, and more details are expected soon.
Prime Minister Starmer condemned the incident as “appalling,” offering his thoughts to those hurt or impacted.
