Merseyside Police have confirmed that a man has been taken into custody after a car drove into a group of Liverpool fans during the club’s Premier League title parade. The event drew hundreds of thousands of supporters who lined the streets as an open-top bus carrying the players made its way through the city.
Reports surfaced that a vehicle had struck several fans, with unconfirmed claims of multiple injuries.
In an official statement, police said: “We are currently responding to reports of a road traffic collision in Liverpool city centre. At just after 6pm on Monday, May 26, we received a call regarding a car that had collided with pedestrians on Water Street. The vehicle stopped at the scene and a male suspect was detained.”
Footage obtained by the Mirror shows a car driving into the crowd before onlookers intervened, pulling open the doors as police arrived shortly after.
Witnesses stated that the incident took place roughly 10 minutes after the open-top bus had passed through the area. The street remained crowded, and authorities began dispersing people following the crash.
Water Street has since been cordoned off, with a North West Air Ambulance helicopter landing at the site. A BBC reporter at the scene reported that at least three injured individuals had been transported for treatment.
The North West Air Ambulance Service released a statement saying: “We are attending an incident in Liverpool city centre following a road traffic collision. Our teams are working with emergency services to provide care to those affected. Further updates will be shared as more information becomes available.”
Liverpool City Council also confirmed it is working with Merseyside Police regarding the incident on Water Street.
