Jürgen Klopp has spoken out firmly against the negative reaction from some Liverpool fans who booed Trent Alexander-Arnold following his announcement that he will leave the club as a free agent.
Earlier this month, Alexander-Arnold revealed he would be ending his 21-year association with Liverpool when his contract expires in June. It’s now widely accepted that he will join Real Madrid, with new Liverpool boss Arne Slot hinting at the move in a recent press conference.
The right-back was met with boos from some sections of Anfield after coming on as a substitute during the 2-2 draw with Arsenal – the team’s first home game since his announcement. He received a similarly cold response during Liverpool’s 3-2 defeat at Brighton the following Monday.
The reaction has divided the fanbase: some feel the boos were unwarranted, while others are upset that he’s leaving for free, meaning the club will miss out on a potential transfer fee had he renewed his contract.
Klopp, who handed Alexander-Arnold his senior debut and coached him for eight years, returned to Merseyside this weekend in his role as ambassador for the LFC Foundation. He’s also set to attend Liverpool’s final Premier League match of the season against Crystal Palace and the post-match trophy ceremony.
At the LFC Foundation’s Gala Ball on Friday at Liverpool Cathedral, Klopp took to the stage holding a signed Alexander-Arnold shirt, which sold for £22,000 at auction, and addressed the controversy.
“I’m not here to tell you what to think—but I can tell you that what you’re thinking is wrong,” Klopp said. He reminded fans of Alexander-Arnold’s major contributions, including a crucial free-kick goal at Hoffenheim that helped secure Champions League qualification, and his iconic quick corner assist in the 4-0 win over Barcelona.
Klopp continued, “I’m not saying don’t be upset or angry. I’m saying: don’t forget. This club is known for remembering. We overlook the negatives and celebrate the positives.”
He admitted turning off the TV when he heard the boos during the Arsenal match, saying it was a deeply disappointing moment: “That’s not who we are. Absolutely not.”
Klopp emphasized Alexander-Arnold’s dedication to Liverpool, stating that he gave his all for the club and its crest over two decades: “Fans should not be angry at him. He wore the badge with pride. Now he’s made a different choice, and it’s up to us how we respond.”
