Comparison of 2024/25 Stats: Martin Zubimendi, Declan Rice, and Thomas Partey

Arsenal Set to Strengthen Midfield with Zubimendi Signing

Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal are already making headlines this summer, with Real Sociedad’s midfield orchestrator Martin Zubimendi, 26, on the brink of joining. Renowned journalist Fabrizio Romano has confirmed that all parties have reached a verbal agreement, with Arsenal prepared to activate the Spaniard’s €60 million release clause.

Despite another season without silverware following their Champions League exit, the Gunners are pushing forward. Declan Rice remains a central figure in midfield, operating as a dynamic box-to-box player. Zubimendi’s arrival is expected to complement Rice’s more adventurous role—but how do his numbers stack up against Rice and Thomas Partey from the 2024/25 campaign?

Zubimendi: Understated but Effective

Though Spain is known for producing technically gifted midfielders, Zubimendi doesn’t quite follow in the footsteps of legends like Iniesta or Xavi in terms of flair. His 67.1 touches per game are the lowest among the trio, but that reflects his preference for simplicity and security over flair or tempo control. He attempts 53.3 passes per match, suggesting a willingness to be involved, though Arsenal’s defenders often carry the playmaking burden while Rice drives forward.

Partey, one of Africa’s highest-paid players, leads in several areas—most touches, passes (especially into the opposition half), and fewest possessions lost (9.6 compared to Zubimendi’s 11.2 and Rice’s 11.6).

Still, Zubimendi stands out for his composure under pressure. He’s physically strong and uses his frame well to shield the ball, making him a stabilizing presence in midfield—a perfect foil for Rice’s marauding style.

Chance Creation: Rice the Creative Leader

In modern football, chances can come from any position. Whether it’s a tricky winger or a relentless full-back, creativity is everywhere. Among the three, Rice leads the way in this area. He has created 1.9 chances per 90 minutes this season—far ahead of Zubimendi and Partey.

That’s not a surprise given Rice’s role, but Zubimendi has quietly impressed with the highest number of forward passes per 90 among the trio. His 66.67% take-on success rate is also solid, just behind Partey’s 70.97%, showcasing his ability to bypass challenges when needed.

Defensive Contribution: Zubimendi’s Domain

Where Zubimendi truly shines is in defense. His numbers in aerial duels, clearances, and interceptions underline his value. He’s won 61.45% of his aerial battles—outperforming both Rice (56.14%) and Partey (53.06%)—and leads in interceptions and clearances as well.

While Partey narrowly edges him in tackles per game (2.9 vs. 2.4), Zubimendi’s knack for breaking up play and feeding the ball to more attacking teammates makes him a key piece of Arteta’s puzzle.

Rice leads in ball recoveries at 4.9 per 90, with Zubimendi and Partey just behind at 4.4—still a sign of their tenacity and defensive timing.

Conclusion: A Smart Addition for Arsenal

Ultimately, the value of a central midfielder depends on the specific needs of a team. For Arsenal, Zubimendi brings exactly what they require: defensive reliability, tactical discipline, and a solid presence in front of the back line.

With over 230 appearances for his boyhood club since 2016, Zubimendi is experienced and resilient. His press-resistance and positional intelligence make him a perfect fit for Arteta’s system.

Though Partey remains a dependable performer, his age raises long-term concerns. Bringing in a younger alternative like Zubimendi is a wise move for a side determined to end their silverware drought.
