Liverpool fans have turned against Darwin Núñez after noticing something he posted on social media just a day before their chance to win the Premier League title.
On Sunday, Arne Slot’s Liverpool side can secure the 2024/25 Premier League trophy with either a win or a draw against Tottenham Hotspur at Anfield.
In the lead-up to the decisive match, many of Liverpool’s key players have stressed how important winning the title is, with captain Virgil van Dijk even urging fans to wear red to create a special atmosphere at Anfield.
However, Núñez, who had stayed fairly quiet during Liverpool’s title chase, has now made headlines for the wrong reasons — and fans are furious.
Since joining Liverpool from Benfica in 2022 for a €75 million (£64 million) fee, Núñez has struggled to meet expectations. Although some supporters hoped that the arrival of new manager Arne Slot this season would help rejuvenate his form, it seems that hasn’t been the case, and rumours suggest Núñez could be on his way out this summer.
In what appears to have been a now-deleted post on his X (formerly Twitter) account, the 25-year-old reportedly wrote: “No wonder I don’t play more, because the last game I started in the Premier League went well and suddenly…”
After quickly deleting the post, Núñez replaced it with a selfie alongside teammate Alexis Mac Allister and another image of his tea, captioned simply: “Good morning!” He also updated his profile picture shortly afterward.
Despite the deletion, sharp-eyed Liverpool fans caught the original post and shared screenshots online — and they’re far from impressed.
One fan commented: “Darwin Núñez is a moron. We all wanted him to succeed but it hasn’t worked out. He’s immature and not worth the trouble. Simple.”
Another vented: “Darwin Núñez’s career at Liverpool is officially over. Freeze him out and sell him this summer.”
A disappointed supporter added: “He’s just too emotional. When he’s good, it’s brilliant, but when he’s off, it’s terrible. It’s a shame — he has all the tools, but he can’t put it together consistently to be top-level. This might be the final nail in the coffin, if it wasn’t already.”
