Jamie Carragher has proposed a tough approach that Liverpool manager Arne Slot should take with Trent Alexander-Arnold, despite his match-winning performance against Leicester City at the King Power Stadium on Sunday.
Alexander-Arnold, 26, came off the bench and scored the decisive goal in Liverpool’s 1-0 win, edging them even closer to what now seems to be an inevitable 20th Premier League title. Overcome with emotion, he celebrated passionately with the traveling Liverpool fans, taking off his shirt after his powerful left-footed finish.
In a post-match interview on Sky Sports, Alexander-Arnold was directly asked whether he would be leaving Liverpool. He declined to address his future, saying, “Like I’ve said all season, I’m not going to discuss my situation. Days like today are special—scoring, winning, being in title races. These are the moments I’ll remember forever, and I’m grateful to be part of them.”
He continued, highlighting the importance of the fans: “It’s a special feeling doing it for them. We play for ourselves and our families, but also for the fans who travel and support us every week. They deserve to see us give everything. Being so close to another league title, especially with fans present this time, makes it even more meaningful.”
He added that teammate Virgil van Dijk encouraged him to take in the moment with the supporters, crediting their continued backing throughout the season.
Despite the emotional scenes, Carragher took a firm stance when analyzing the situation on Sky Sports. He said that unless Alexander-Arnold commits his future to the club and the new manager, he shouldn’t be in the starting lineup going forward.
“If Trent hasn’t committed, which he hasn’t… then he shouldn’t be starting,” Carragher said.
Micah Richards responded by suggesting Alexander-Arnold deserves some recognition: “Maybe not just for a send-off… but considering next season’s plans.”
Carragher stood firm: “Liverpool aren’t a club that gives send-offs.”
Richards replied, emphasizing Alexander-Arnold’s contributions: “They’re about to win the league—he’s been vital. I get what you’re saying, but for everything he’s done and how long he’s been there, he deserves a few more appearances just to say ‘well done.’”
