After months of uncertainty, it now seems Mo Salah is set to extend his contract with Liverpool.
On Wednesday, The Times’ Paul Joyce reported that both Salah and Virgil van Dijk are close to agreeing new deals, ensuring their stay at Anfield for at least two more years.
The 32-year-old had been the subject of persistent transfer speculation, with Saudi Pro League officials expressing confidence in signing him as recently as last week. However, it now appears that the long-running saga is reaching its conclusion.
Salah Always Intended to Stay at Liverpool
In an update on his YouTube channel, Fabrizio Romano revealed that Salah had always wanted to remain at Liverpool and was simply negotiating for a satisfactory contract offer.
Romano explained: “Saudi clubs were aggressive in their pursuit of Salah, prepared to offer him an enormous deal—though not quite at the level they hope to offer Vinicius Junior in the future, but close.
“Despite this, Salah remained respectful to Liverpool. Behind the scenes, he never progressed talks with Saudi clubs or other European teams. His message was always clear: ‘I want to stay.’ While financial terms were important, an agreement has now been reached. The final details are being sorted, but everything is in the final stages and will be signed soon.”
A Huge Relief for Liverpool Fans
The news of Salah and Van Dijk’s impending contract extensions was met with enormous relief by Liverpool supporters. While official confirmation is still pending, it already feels like a major burden has been lifted from the fanbase.
When around 60,000 fans arrive at Anfield for Sunday’s match against West Ham, they will do so knowing that two of the club’s all-time greats are set to stay—hopefully adding to a celebratory atmosphere after a challenging spell on the pitch.
Salah’s comments last November, when he admitted he was “probably more out than in” and had not yet received a contract offer, may have sparked fears of a 2025 departure. However, in hindsight, this now appears to have been an honest reflection of the situation at the time, perhaps even a strategic move to pressure the club’s owners into action.
With clarity now emerging over the futures of key players whose contracts were running down, Salah and Van Dijk’s expected renewals provide a significant morale boost as Liverpool enter the decisive weeks of a potentially historic Premier League campaign.
