Alisson Becker has been absent from Liverpool’s lineup since the end of the international break, but a clearer update on his status has now emerged.

Speaking to the BBC (via liverpoolfc.com), Arne Slot confirmed: “Yes, he did [not pass the concussion protocol]. There’s a week to go [until the next match], so that gives us some time. But as Liverpool, we always adhere to the protocol for concussions. If all the necessary steps aren’t completed, he won’t be in goal. He’s eager to return, but the protocol must be followed.”

Although the 32-year-old was seen training ahead of the Merseyside derby, raising expectations of an imminent return, fans are still awaiting his comeback.

The FA’s concussion guidelines recommend a 21-day recovery period before resuming play. With Liverpool’s match against West Ham falling on day 23, it appears to be a safe return window for the Brazilian.

Alisson is expected back soon, which could mark the end of Caoimhin Kelleher’s run in goal. After conceding three goals from three shots on target against Fulham, the Irish goalkeeper may have played his last game for the Reds. While Kelleher has been a reliable deputy, the anticipated arrival of Giorgi Mamardashvili suggests his time at the club may be coming to an end.

In the past two seasons, Alisson has featured in just 60 of Liverpool’s 107 matches, meaning the next backup keeper will likely see significant playing time.
