Mohamed Salah’s season at Liverpool has been marked by remarkable achievements, but he is now at risk of reaching an unwanted milestone.
The Egyptian forward has failed to score or assist in his last three appearances, a rare occurrence for Liverpool’s star player. It has been over four years since Salah went four consecutive games without directly contributing to a goal.
During this goalless run, Liverpool were eliminated from the Champions League by Paris Saint-Germain and suffered a heavy defeat to Newcastle United in the Carabao Cup final. While they narrowly secured a victory over Everton in the Merseyside derby, Salah struggled to make an impact.
Liverpool manager Arne Slot pointed to the strength of their recent opponents as a factor in Salah’s dry spell. “Sometimes the fixture list is tougher than usual,” Slot explained.
“PSG are among the best teams in Europe right now. Newcastle dominated us in the Carabao Cup final, and Everton defended deep with ten players in their own box.”
Slot acknowledged Salah’s hunger for goals, emphasizing his ability to remain focused even when not at his best. “Mo lives for scoring. Of course, he won’t be happy about this, but his greatest strength is that even on an off day, he can still find the net. That’s why he scores so many – he wants it so much. There may have been times this season when he looked happier, but that applies to the whole squad.”
The last time Salah went four matches without a goal or assist was in early 2021, when Liverpool struggled with injuries and played in an empty Anfield due to COVID-19 restrictions. During that run, he failed to contribute against Everton, Sheffield United, Chelsea, and – fittingly – Fulham, who Liverpool will face this Sunday.
