A Sky Sports reporter has made a major claim about Newcastle striker Alexander Isak, leaving Liverpool fans frustrated.
At 25, Isak is among the most in-form strikers in Europe, scoring 24 goals and providing five assists in 34 appearances for Newcastle this season. One of his most crucial contributions came in the Magpies’ 2-1 Carabao Cup final win over Liverpool last month.
Holding onto the Swedish international will be a top priority for Eddie Howe this summer, especially with Liverpool and Arsenal emerging as the leading contenders for his signature.
Football finance expert Kieran Maguire suggests that both clubs are in strong financial positions, likely to qualify for next season’s Champions League, which could help them afford Newcastle’s reported £150m asking price.
“If you sign a player for £150m and spread that cost over five years, it’s £30m per year plus wages,” Maguire told The Overlap. “Even at the top end, if wages are £15m per year, you’re looking at £45m annually—essentially the cost of Champions League entry.”
However, Sky Sports journalist Lyall Thomas made a surprising revelation regarding Isak’s situation.
“It remains to be seen whether Liverpool would spend that kind of money (£100-150m) on a new striker, especially with competition from other clubs,” Thomas wrote. “But Liverpool’s recruitment team had Isak on their radar in 2022 before Jurgen Klopp and Pep Lijnders opted for Darwin Nunez instead.”
Many Liverpool fans believe choosing Nunez over Isak was a mistake. Nunez arrived from Benfica in June 2022 for a club-record £85m but has struggled to meet expectations at Anfield. Meanwhile, Newcastle secured Isak that same summer for £63m, and the Swede has already proven his worth. With three years left on his contract, Newcastle holds the advantage in any potential negotiations.
Liverpool supporters voiced their opinions on social media.
One fan remarked, “So it was actually Klopp’s decision? Funny how this narrative is being pushed. Next, they’ll blame him for players leaving on free transfers—forgetting that the team leading the league is still Klopp’s.”
Another added, “To be fair, Nunez looked like a top talent when he was at Benfica.”
A third fan commented, “Signing Nunez was a terrible decision, but I don’t like all these hit pieces on Klopp.”
Isak’s Stance on a Summer Move
Isak addressed speculation about his future in an interview with Swedish outlet FotbollSkanalen in March.
“There’s a lot of talk outside the club, but internally, no one is discussing anything like that,” Isak said. “I don’t know much about it, to be honest. From our side and within the club, there are no talks—my only focus is playing.”
He added, “I’m not thinking about the future. My goal is to perform for Newcastle. We’ve won the cup, and now we want to finish strong and qualify for the Champions League. That’s my only focus. I feel incredibly comfortable at Newcastle, and I’m not thinking about anything else.”
