A new update on Viktor Gyökeres’ future has surfaced, and it’s quite unexpected.
The 26-year-old Swedish striker has been attracting interest from several top clubs after an outstanding season with Sporting CP, where he has scored 43 goals and provided 11 assists in 43 appearances.
In January, he was linked with a possible move to Manchester United, largely due to his previous work with Red Devils’ target Ruben Amorim at Sporting. However, no transfer materialized.
Back in December, Portuguese outlet A Bola reported that Gyökeres had a €100m (£83m) release clause, which would have been sufficient to secure him during the winter transfer window. The report also stated that Sporting were open to selling him in the summer for a reduced fee of €70m (£58m) plus bonuses.
Now, a revised price has been revealed.
According to The Sun, Sporting Lisbon are now willing to let Gyökeres leave for a fee between £55m and £70m as a token of appreciation for his loyalty during the winter transfer window, despite strong interest from bigger clubs.
His next destination remains uncertain, but The Mail reports that the striker prefers a move to Arsenal over Manchester United, as the Gunners are expected to compete in next season’s Champions League.
Arsenal’s summer transfer plans will be managed by their new sporting director, Andrea Berta, who officially joined on March 30.
During a recent press conference, Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta discussed the club’s upcoming transfer window, stating:
> “The way we planned the first five summers, they were going to be big with different objectives because the turnaround of players and goals of those windows were distinct.
> But now, as we go again, we want to increase the squad’s depth and improve quality to take the next step. It’s going to be a big one, and we are very excited about it.”
