Virgil van Dijk responds firmly to Michael Owen’s remarks about Liverpool’s season after their crucial win over Everton.
Liverpool edged past Everton with a 1-0 victory on Wednesday, moving closer to securing the Premier League title. Diogo Jota netted the only goal, while fans noticed an exchange between Curtis Jones and Trent Alexander-Arnold right after the final whistle.
With just eight league games left, Liverpool now hold a 12-point lead over second-placed Arsenal.
Following the match, Van Dijk spoke with the media, including Premier League Productions, where former Liverpool and Manchester United forward Michael Owen was on the panel.
Owen analyzed Liverpool’s season, questioning their cup defeats to Paris Saint-Germain and Newcastle United. He asked Van Dijk how difficult it was to refocus on the Premier League after those setbacks.
Van Dijk disagreed with Owen’s suggestion, responding, “So you’re saying the season isn’t special anymore?”
Owen clarified, stating that while the season was still special, he believed it had the potential to be even more extraordinary.
Van Dijk pushed back, emphasizing, “We need to change that narrative. We’re competing for the biggest prize of the season. Every team fights to be at the top of the Premier League, and we’re in that position with eight games to go. We know what’s at stake, and we’re ready to fight for it.”
He added that no one expected Liverpool to compete on all four fronts at the start of the season, but they are still in contention for the most significant prize. “This season can still be very, very special,” he concluded.
