Arsenal and Manchester United are both interested in signing Viktor Gyokeres this summer.
The Swedish striker has been in outstanding form for Sporting CP since joining in 2023, making him one of the most sought-after attackers in world football. With a transfer expected in the upcoming window, Manchester United, managed by Ruben Amorim, have been strongly linked to him. However, Arsenal’s new sporting director, Andrea Berta, is also eager to bring him to the Emirates.
A battle between the two English giants was anticipated, but there is now a setback for one of them.
Gyokeres Prefers Arsenal Over Manchester United
Both clubs are in need of a reliable striker. Arsenal have struggled to replace Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, while Manchester United’s investments in Joshua Zirkzee and Rasmus Hojlund have yet to pay off.
Gyokeres, praised by Mark Robins for his “unbelievable” talent, would be an excellent addition to either squad. However, according to A Bola, the forward has chosen Arsenal over Manchester United.
The reason? Gyokeres has a shortlist of clubs he is willing to join, and while Arsenal are on it, United are not—due to their absence from the Champions League. The other English clubs he would consider are Liverpool and Manchester City, while overseas options include PSG, Bayern Munich, Real Madrid, and Barcelona.
As of now, Arsenal are leading the race to sign him.
Sporting CP’s Stance If United Offer More Money
Securing Gyokeres requires not only convincing the player but also reaching an agreement with Sporting CP.
The Portuguese club has a gentleman’s agreement to sell him for £58.6 million, which is below his release clause. Arsenal can sign him at this price, but what if United offer a higher fee?
The report states that Sporting will respect Gyokeres’ preference. If Arsenal match the agreed price, Sporting will accept their bid, even if United propose a larger sum.
This is great news for Arsenal but a blow for Manchester United, who were once assured that Gyokeres would join them.
