Liverpool forward Darwin Nunez is being closely monitored by two Premier League clubs as he considers a possible departure from Anfield this summer.
Nunez has struggled to cement his place in Liverpool’s starting lineup, first under Jurgen Klopp and now under Arne Slot, failing to establish himself as a key player. The Uruguayan has managed only seven goals across all competitions this season, increasing speculation about his exit if the right offer arises.
Atletico Madrid, led by Diego Simeone, has been linked with a move for Nunez, as the Argentine coach reportedly admires the striker. However, Newcastle United and Nottingham Forest have now also joined the race for the former Benfica star, according to TeamTalk.
Newcastle, the recent Carabao Cup winners, are monitoring Nunez’s situation as they prepare for a potential departure of Alexander Isak. Meanwhile, Nottingham Forest is also keen, particularly if they secure Champions League qualification next season. Despite Chris Wood’s impressive form, manager Nuno Espirito Santo has prioritized signing a new striker, with Ademola Lookman and Viktor Gyokeres also on their radar.
If Nunez departs, Liverpool would likely need to recruit a new striker—something that could align with Slot’s vision for the team.
Slot’s Expectations for a Striker
In February, Slot emphasized his desire for attackers who contribute both goals and assists.
“Facilitator—that’s a nice word. I didn’t know that one yet,” Slot remarked. “But in the end, we want our forwards and midfielders to score. Goals should come from various positions, including set-pieces.”
He also made it clear that for his No. 9, providing assists alone isn’t sufficient—the striker must also be a consistent goal scorer.
“We’re working on improving the team step by step, and ultimately, the No. 9 must be a facilitator—like a winger—but also someone who regularly finds the back of the net,” Slot concluded.
