Paul Merson Urges Arne Slot to Drop Jota and Alisson Ahead of Cup Final After PSG Exit
As Liverpool gear up for a crucial cup final while still reeling from their Champions League elimination, Paul Merson has called on manager Arne Slot to make two bold changes to the starting lineup.
Speaking to Sportskeeda, the former Arsenal star shared his opinion on Liverpool’s attack, saying:
“Darwin Nunez missed his penalty against PSG, but I’d still start him against Newcastle. He always gives defenders a tough time. If I’m Dan Burn or Fabian Schar, I’d prefer to face Diogo Jota. Jota likes to drop deep, but Nunez would keep the center-backs constantly occupied. I know he might not get picked after that penalty miss, but he’s a real handful in the box, and that’s exactly what you want in a final.”
Merson also believes Liverpool should stick with Caoimhin Kelleher in goal, despite Alisson Becker’s top form:
“Kelleher is probably the best second-choice keeper in the world and has been outstanding in cup games for Liverpool. Alisson is world-class, but I think Slot should go with Kelleher. He’s earned it after playing a key role throughout this competition. And it’s not even a risk—Kelleher has proven himself plenty of times.”
These would be major decisions for Slot to make as he prepares for his first final in charge, but Merson’s logic is clear: reward Kelleher for his role in getting Liverpool to this stage and choose Nunez for his ability to trouble defenders.
However, with Alisson having started in the semi-final’s first leg and delivering a stellar performance against PSG, it’s uncertain whether Slot will make that switch. Kelleher is typically trusted in domestic cup finals and may not have another appearance this season, making this a potential farewell match if he’s selected.
Up front, Diogo Jota’s struggles since returning from injury open the door for rotation. Yet, Darwin Nunez’s poor showing against PSG—rated as low as 1/10—might give Slot pause before recalling him. Meanwhile, Luis Diaz and Cody Gakpo are also pushing for starts, as Liverpool’s entire attacking unit has felt the strain—both mentally and physically—of their European exit.
With so many tough choices to make, all eyes will be on Slot’s lineup decisions at Wembley. Liverpool fans will hope that whoever gets picked can deliver and bring home the trophy.
