Liverpool supporters were left fuming after noticing what a Paris Saint-Germain star did following the final whistle of their Champions League clash at Anfield.
PSG secured their place in the Champions League quarter-finals by defeating Liverpool in a penalty shootout after the tie finished 1-1 on aggregate. The French side came out on top with a 4-1 win in the shootout, with Désiré Doué scoring the decisive penalty and celebrating in front of the PSG fans.
However, it was Achraf Hakimi’s actions after the game that sparked outrage among Liverpool fans still in the Kop. According to James Pearce, Hakimi “provoked an angry reaction” from the home crowd when he held a PSG flag aloft toward the iconic stand.
Images circulating online show Hakimi raising the PSG flag in front of the Kop, a gesture that infuriated many Liverpool supporters. Reports say Hakimi had initially left the flag in the center circle before police removed it from the pitch.
Fans quickly took to social media to voice their anger. One person wrote, “No need for that, is there? Clown. We haven’t disrespected them at all.” Another added, “They’ll always be a small club,” while a third commented, “Weird for him to do that.”
Although Hakimi, who wore the captain’s armband after Marquinhos was subbed off, didn’t take part in the shootout, his post-match behavior was seen as adding insult to injury after Liverpool’s elimination.
Following the match, PSG manager Luis Enrique reflected on the contest, suggesting both sides were worthy of progressing. “You could argue either team deserved to go through. I think we may have done slightly more, especially in the first leg, but today we showed what kind of team we are,” he said. “Even when Liverpool had the upper hand, we kept attacking, kept creating danger. It was a top performance, exactly what we needed.”
