Fans believe Arne Slot took a subtle swipe at Liverpool owners FSG following the club’s Champions League elimination at the hands of PSG at Anfield.

Liverpool were knocked out on penalties after their last-16 tie ended 1-1 on aggregate across two legs and extra time. PSG secured a 1-0 victory in the second leg, with Ousmane Dembele scoring early in the 12th minute.

In the decisive shootout, Gianluigi Donnarumma denied both Darwin Nunez and Curtis Jones, sealing Liverpool’s exit from the competition.

Speaking post-match, Slot refrained from criticizing his players, insisting they had done enough to win. When asked if PSG were favorites for the Champions League title, Slot disagreed and highlighted the French club’s financial muscle.

He said: “Over 90 minutes, I don’t think we deserve to lose this game today. Over 180 minutes, maybe it was fair to go to extra time. In extra time, PSG were slightly better. Normally, you meet teams like this in a semi-final or final, but unfortunately for us, we faced PSG, one of the richest clubs in the world, at this stage.”

Liverpool’s lack of spending has been a sore point among fans, especially since FSG only sanctioned two permanent signings last summer. Federico Chiesa arrived from Juventus for £12.5 million but didn’t feature in the game, while Giorgi Mamardashvili was signed for £25 million from Valencia but loaned back for the season.
