Liverpool fans were left frustrated with one player’s role in PSG’s goal during their Champions League last-16 clash at Anfield.
Arne Slot’s side came into the game holding a 1-0 advantage from the first leg, thanks to Harvey Elliott’s late winner in Paris — a match largely dominated by the French side.
Liverpool had goalkeeper Alisson to thank for keeping them in the tie, as he made several crucial saves. However, there was little he could do to stop PSG’s equaliser early on.
The goal stemmed from a swift counter-attack, initiated and finished by Ousmane Dembele, who slotted home from close range.
Bradley Barcola delivered a cross aiming for Dembele, which Ibrahima Konate tried to cut out. But Konate’s attempted interception was poor, deflecting the ball straight to Dembele for an easy finish.
Fans were quick to criticize Konate’s part in the goal.
One supporter commented: “Konate with the best assist you’ll see to Dembele.”
Another added: “Alisson had that covered.”
A third questioned: “What was Konate doing there?”
Virgil van Dijk also came under scrutiny for his positioning, as both he and Konate appeared to play Dembele onside during the build-up.
“Konate has to cover the channel side,” one fan noted. “I have no idea what position VVD is taking up. Dembele breaks the line easily and scores.”
This goal was a significant blow for Liverpool, who haven’t lost a Champions League match at Anfield since their 5-2 defeat to Real Madrid in 2023.
Slot’s men have been almost unbeatable at home, suffering just one defeat — a 1-0 loss to Nottingham Forest in September — which remains their only Premier League setback this season.
