Liverpool star Mohamed Salah was visibly emotional after the team’s heartbreaking exit from the Champions League at the hands of Paris Saint-Germain last night.
Despite securing a 1-0 victory in the first leg away in Paris, Liverpool suffered a 1-0 defeat in the return leg at Anfield, and ultimately lost in a penalty shootout.
Although Salah has been one of the top performers in world football this season, he struggled to make a significant impact in either match.
Under Arne Slot, Liverpool have been in excellent form overall and remain strong contenders for the Premier League title, but this Champions League elimination will certainly sting.
As seen below, Salah appeared devastated after the final whistle — a reaction that reflects not just the night’s result but perhaps something deeper.
This felt like a major opportunity lost for both Salah and Liverpool. Had they advanced, they would have been among the favorites to win the tournament. Now, that chance is gone.
It’s also worth noting that this could have been Salah’s final shot at Champions League glory with Liverpool, as he’s nearing the end of his contract and could leave on a free transfer this summer if a new deal isn’t reached.
Even if he stays, it may be difficult for him to replicate such an outstanding season, especially as he turns 33 in June. Key teammates like Virgil van Dijk and Andrew Robertson are also aging, and Trent Alexander-Arnold’s future remains uncertain with his contract winding down.
Given all that, it’s understandable why Salah looked so distraught — this may have been the last real chance for this group of players to win Europe’s biggest prize together.
