Liverpool haven’t made many changes to their squad over the past year, as the focus has largely been on appointing a new head coach and sporting director. However, this summer could see a very different situation unfold.
Leading the list of potential departures are Mo Salah, Virgil van Dijk, and Trent Alexander-Arnold, all of whom are entering the final three months of their current contracts. Losing any one of them would be a huge blow, given how crucial they are to the team.
Additionally, younger players like Jarell Quansah have been linked with possible loan moves, while plenty of names are being thrown around as potential targets for incoming boss Arne Slot.
Five players tipped for summer exits
On Tuesday, Florian Plettenberg shared on X a list of five players who could realistically leave Liverpool in the summer as part of a planned squad revamp. The Sky Germany journalist wrote: “Liverpool FC are already preparing for an exciting summer transfer window. A squad reshaping is on the agenda, with multiple new arrivals expected. Possible departures include Caoimhin Kelleher, Wataru Endo, Harvey Elliott, Federico Chiesa, and Diogo Jota.”
Liverpool should avoid letting players go without adequate replacements
If Liverpool are gearing up for a busy summer, as Plettenberg suggests, it’s natural to expect some players will need to make way for new signings. Still, supporters will likely be wary of too many exits, especially considering the limited transfer activity since early 2024. Any major departures should only happen if top-quality replacements are secured.
Among the five named, Kelleher appears the most likely to move on, given Alisson’s outstanding form and reports of Giorgi Mamardashvili potentially arriving.
Chiesa might also head out on loan if his struggles for game time continue, having made only three starts since joining from Juventus last August.
On the other hand, seeing Jota leave would be a shock, even with his frequent injury issues. Likewise, while Endo and Elliott haven’t always been regular starters, both have shown their value to the squad and shouldn’t be let go lightly.
Although players lacking minutes may look for opportunities elsewhere, Liverpool must remember that with the demands of modern football and a packed schedule, having strong depth beyond the starting lineup is essential.
Therefore, the club must tread carefully when deciding who stays and who goes this summer, especially if they face challenges in bringing in key transfer targets.
