Mikel Arteta gave a revealing response when asked about the Premier League title race following Arsenal’s disappointing draw against Manchester United, a result that saw them drop vital points.
With just 10 games left in the season, Arsenal now trail league leaders Liverpool by 15 points after a shaky 1-1 result at Old Trafford. Although Declan Rice equalized Bruno Fernandes’ opener with a brilliant strike in the 74th minute, Arsenal, who started strongly, faded in the latter stages and were lucky to escape with a point.
In a tense post-match interview with Sky Sports, Arteta, clearly frustrated, opened by lamenting his team’s missed opportunities:
“In the first half, we were exceptional, but we didn’t test the keeper,” he said. “We created unbelievable situations but lacked that final shot or pass. We rushed things and didn’t capitalize.”
However, when Sky’s Patrick Davison pressed him about Arsenal’s dwindling title chances, Arteta cut the interview short and walked away.
Later, in his press conference, when another journalist asked whether he still believed Arsenal were in the title race, Arteta gave a more composed but pointed reply:
“I don’t want to say that, but today the frustration is that we didn’t win,” he admitted. “We know the urgency — we have to win every match. If not, there’s no chance. I don’t think this is the right moment to talk about that.”
Arteta also addressed a controversial moment from the match — Fernandes’ free-kick goal. Referee Anthony Taylor had set Arsenal’s wall 11.2 yards back, farther than the standard 10 yards, giving Fernandes extra space to strike.
“He was smart and took advantage — that’s football,” Arteta said. “He was cleverer than the referee. It’s allowed, so fair play.”
Christian Eriksen later explained how crucial that extra distance can be for free-kick takers, telling Sky Sports:
“It makes a huge difference. You don’t need to hit it as high, and with the wall further back, it’s easier for Bruno to get it over. It worked perfectly for him.”
