Liverpool fans were left surprised when Mohamed Salah was seen trying to prevent his team from making a sixth substitution during their clash with Southampton. The reason behind his actions has now been revealed—and it’s something few had considered.
During the closing moments of the match, with Liverpool already in control, manager Arne Slot decided to introduce Jarell Quansah off the bench. However, Salah, clearly alarmed, attempted to stop the change from happening. Many speculated that the Egyptian forward feared a potential points deduction, as Premier League rules typically allow only five substitutions per team.
However, the reason Liverpool were allowed a sixth change was due to a little-known rule: Southampton had earlier used a concussion substitution when Jan Bednarek was forced off with a head injury. According to league regulations, when a team makes a concussion sub, their opponents are also granted an extra substitution.
