Fans have criticized a Paris Saint-Germain player after a costly mistake allowed Liverpool to secure a shocking Champions League victory.
On Wednesday night, Liverpool pulled off an unexpected 1-0 win over PSG at the Parc des Princes, despite being dominated for most of the match. The French champions controlled the game but were unable to score, largely due to an outstanding performance from Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson Becker.
Following the defeat, fans took to social media to single out one PSG player, blaming him for putting his team at a disadvantage heading into the second leg at Anfield.
Liverpool’s decisive goal came late in the match after substitutes Darwin Núñez and Harvey Elliott combined to create the visitors’ only clear chance, which the young Englishman calmly converted.
However, many fans believe PSG goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma should have done more to prevent the goal. Social media was flooded with criticism, with one fan stating, “Donnarumma had nothing to do for 90 minutes yet lets in the very first shot he faces. Most overrated goalkeeper of all time.”
Another wrote, “There hasn’t been a worse goalkeeper in the Champions League over the last four years than Donnarumma.”
A third fan added, “Alisson had a thousand saves to make and stopped every single one. Donnarumma had just one and failed—how is he still playing at the highest level?”
Another comment read, “The difference in this game? One team has Alisson in goal, the other has Donnarumma.”
Donnarumma had a quiet night in Paris, but ultimately fell short when his team needed him most. His struggles were further highlighted by the exceptional performance of his counterpart, Alisson, who made nine crucial saves to keep PSG at bay.
