Liverpool are starting to lay the groundwork for what is expected to be a busy summer transfer window.
The Reds are in a strong position for a successful season, especially after Arsenal’s dropped points against West Ham on Saturday brought them closer to securing the Premier League title.
While Arne Slot and his squad remain focused on their performances, sporting director Richard Hughes must turn his attention to transfer plans. Hughes has had a relatively quiet start at Liverpool, but the summer of 2025 is shaping up to be a key test of his abilities.
One player frequently linked to Hughes’ plans is Bayern Munich star Joshua Kimmich. With his contract expiring at the end of the season, speculation has grown about a potential move to Anfield. However, new developments suggest Kimmich’s future is now heading in a different direction.
Joshua Kimmich set to extend stay at Bayern Munich
Kimmich doesn’t fit the typical profile of a Liverpool signing, and with little precedent to judge Hughes’ transfer strategy, it remains unclear how he plans to operate.
Still, signing a 30-year-old on high wages from a European powerhouse never seemed like a move Hughes would prioritize. According to German journalist Florian Plettenberg, Bayern and Kimmich are now close to agreeing on a contract extension.
“The negotiations between FC Bayern and Joshua Kimmich are well advanced,” Plettenberg shared on X. “A new top contract, possibly until 2028, is in the works, with only final details left to confirm.”
He also stated that, despite various rumors, there were never any serious talks between Kimmich and Liverpool or Real Madrid.
Liverpool exploring Kimmich alternatives
Plettenberg’s report won’t come as a shock to Liverpool fans. While Kimmich could have been a valuable addition, a move to Anfield always seemed unlikely.
According to TeamTALK, Kimmich was never a primary target for Liverpool, and instead, the club has two alternative midfield options in mind.
Barcelona’s Frenkie de Jong is reportedly under consideration, while Stuttgart’s Angelo Stiller is also on Liverpool’s radar. The two players offer different skill sets, suggesting Liverpool is keeping its options open as it looks to strengthen the midfield.
With reinforcements needed in that area, these won’t be the only names Liverpool explores ahead of the summer transfer window.
