Arne Slot will be on the sidelines for Liverpool’s match against Wolves on Sunday, despite being charged—along with his assistant—following their dismissals in the 2-2 draw with Everton midweek. The game ended in dramatic fashion after James Tarkowski’s stoppage-time goal, leading to heated exchanges when referee Michael Oliver blew the final whistle.
During the match, Curtis Jones and Abdoulaye Doucoure were both sent off after a tense altercation. Slot and his assistant, Sipke Hulshoff, received similar punishments after confronting the referee post-game. Though the FA has reprimanded both coaches, they are still allowed to be in the dugout on Sunday at 2 PM.
Slot Has Until Wednesday to Appeal
The FA released a statement on Friday confirming the charges against Slot and Hulshoff and setting a deadline for them to appeal.
“Everton, Liverpool, Arne Slot, and Sipke Hulshoff have been charged following the Premier League fixture on Wednesday, February 12. The Liverpool manager is accused of acting improperly and/or using insulting or abusive language toward both the match referee and an assistant referee after the game.
“Liverpool’s assistant manager is also accused of improper conduct and using abusive language towards a match official, which led to his dismissal. Additionally, after being sent off, he allegedly continued to behave improperly towards an official. Everton, Liverpool, Slot, and Hulshoff have until Wednesday, February 19, to respond.”
According to FA rules, those charged have three business days to contest the decision. Since the announcement was made on Friday, the deadline extends to Wednesday, as weekends do not count as business days, even though Premier League matches take place.
Any potential punishment for Slot will only be decided after the appeal deadline, meaning he is free to manage Liverpool against Wolves. Moreover, he may not receive a suspension at all—he could instead face a fine or a formal warning.
Although Slot was not permitted to address the media immediately after the Everton game, he acknowledged in his pre-match press conference that emotions got the better of him. He also hinted that he is unlikely to challenge the FA’s charge.
