Liverpool midfielder Curtis Jones has spoken out for the first time since being sent off following his team’s 2-2 Merseyside derby draw with Everton.
Jones received a second yellow card and was dismissed after shoving Abdoulaye Doucoure shortly after full-time, leading to a heated brawl between both sets of players. He had already been booked earlier in the match for a late tackle.
Doucoure also received a second yellow card after running towards the away fans and making gestures, which escalated tensions. Referee Michael Oliver also sent off Liverpool manager Arne Slot and his assistant Sipke Hulsoff after the final whistle.
Shortly after the match, Doucoure posted on Twitter, sharing photos of himself celebrating and banners inside Goodison Park, along with the words: “Passion. Determination. Desire. Goodison Park.” This derby marked the final one at Everton’s historic home before their move to Bramley Moore Dock next season.
James Tarkowski salvaged a point for Everton with a stoppage-time equalizer after Beto had put them ahead in the first half. Despite the late drama, Liverpool had earlier taken a 2-0 lead through Mohamed Salah.
Jones, who will miss Liverpool’s next match due to his suspension, avoided commenting on the Doucoure incident. Instead, he posted on Twitter: “Always together!” along with photos of Liverpool’s celebrations and himself dribbling past Everton’s Jesper Lindstrom.
Meanwhile, PGMOL chief Keith Hackett suggested that the altercation could lead to a police investigation, as an object was thrown from the stands and struck Everton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford. He told Football Insider that both clubs would likely be charged for failing to control their players, and authorities were reviewing footage to identify the individual responsible for throwing the bottle.
