Mikel Arteta poised to prevent Arsenal star’s departure in final hours of transfer window despite deal being ‘close’

An Arsenal player is reportedly close to finalizing a deal to leave the club, but manager Mikel Arteta is set to block an immediate transfer.

Despite dealing with injuries to key players, including Bukayo Saka, Arsenal have not made any signings during the January transfer window. They have been linked with moves for Real Sociedad’s Martin Zubimendi and Bayern Munich’s Mathys Tel, while reports suggest a bid for Aston Villa’s Ollie Watkins was rejected.

So far, Arsenal have also refrained from selling any players. However, Arteta is now said to have blocked the departure of a first-team player, despite that player being close to agreeing on a pre-contract move elsewhere.

According to Sky Sports, midfielder Jorginho is nearing an agreement to join Brazilian club Flamengo in the summer. Journalist Luca Bendoni claims Flamengo would prefer to sign the 33-year-old immediately, but Arsenal are unwilling to let him leave in January as they push for the Premier League title.

Since joining from Chelsea in January 2023, Jorginho has made 48 Premier League appearances for Arsenal. He scored a penalty in Arsenal’s recent 3-1 Champions League win over Girona and has been a regular in cup competitions.

However, with his contract set to expire this summer, it seems likely that the Italian midfielder will leave at the end of the season rather than extending his stay at the Emirates.
