Blaze erupts outside Etihad Stadium before Man City’s crucial Champions League showdown.

A fire outside the Etihad Stadium threatened to disrupt Manchester City’s preparations ahead of their final Champions League group-stage match.

City secured a place in the knockout play-off round with a 3-1 victory over their Belgian opponents.

Before kickoff, emergency services were called to tackle a fire that broke out at a merchandise stand outside the stadium, causing panic among fans.

Footage circulating on social media shows Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue arriving swiftly to contain the blaze. Fortunately, no injuries were reported, and the match proceeded as planned.

City had planned to introduce their January signings—Omar Marmoush, Abdukodir Khusanov, and Vitor Reis—to fans outside the Etihad, but the unveiling had to be canceled. The area was evacuated as a precaution to prevent the fire from spreading. However, supporters were allowed back into the West Stand reception shortly after.

In an official statement, Manchester City confirmed: “A fire occurred at one of the outdoor merchandise kiosks near the Colin Bell West Stand entrance. Emergency services responded promptly, and the fire has now been extinguished. The safety of attendees is our top priority, and all planned events in the West Stand reception, including the player welcome, have been canceled.”

A spokesperson for Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service (GMFRS) added: “Just before 6 PM, two fire engines from Blackley and Philips Park stations were dispatched to reports of a fire involving an outbuilding in the stadium’s car park. Crews arrived quickly, using two hose reels to extinguish the fire and ensure the area was safe. Firefighters remained on site for around 30 minutes.”

On the pitch, City found themselves trailing at halftime after Raphael Onyedika put Brugge ahead. However, Pep Guardiola’s side responded strongly, with Mateo Kovacic equalizing in the 53rd minute.
