Mikel Arteta has acknowledged that he is consulting his players on which striker Arsenal should target this month, as he seeks reinforcements to sustain their title push against Liverpool.
With Gabriel Jesus out for up to a year due to an ACL injury, Arteta is determined to bolster his attacking options before the transfer window closes in 10 days.
Jesus’ injury leaves Kai Havertz as Arsenal’s sole recognized striker, while Bukayo Saka is also unavailable until at least March after suffering a hamstring injury against Crystal Palace on December 21.
Declan Rice recently hinted that a signing might be imminent, and Arteta confirmed the squad is aware of the need for reinforcements.
“We’re short on numbers, and everyone knows the situation,” Arteta said. “Our focus is on making the right decisions for the team and the club.”
Arteta also explained that he often consults players when considering transfers, particularly if they are familiar with the potential recruit.
“Players can provide insights that data cannot. I want to understand how a striker responds to adversity—missing chances, physical battles, or different pressures. That kind of perspective is invaluable.”
While Arteta has previously been cautious about focusing on transfers, Jesus’ injury has shifted his outlook.
“Losing Jesus and Saka has left us short on goals and attacking options. If we find the right player to strengthen the team, we’ll act, but we won’t sign just for the sake of it.”
On a brighter note, William Saliba and Myles Lewis-Skelly could return for Arsenal’s match against Wolves after missing the midweek Champions League win over Dinamo Zagreb.
Arsenal, currently six points behind Liverpool in the Premier League after playing an extra game, remain committed to closing the gap.
“The margins in the title race are incredibly tight,” Arteta said. “We’re ready to seize any opportunity if Liverpool falters. There’s still a long way to go, and the race is in our hands.”
