The Premier League has clarified the decision behind Arsenal youngster Myles Lewis-Skelly’s straight red card against Wolves.
Referee Michael Oliver sent off the 18-year-old after he deliberately tripped Matt Doherty, a foul that typically warrants a yellow card. However, Oliver surprised Arsenal fans by showing a red instead.
There was speculation that the dismissal was for denying a clear goalscoring opportunity, despite the incident occurring 90 yards from the goal. However, the Premier League Match Centre account on X (formerly Twitter) provided clarification.
“The referee’s decision to issue a red card for Lewis-Skelly was reviewed and upheld by VAR, which determined the challenge constituted serious foul play,” the account explained.
The explanation didn’t sit well with users on X, who expressed frustration with the decision.
One user wrote: “For an account meant to increase transparency in officiating decisions, you’re absolutely useless.”
Another added: “This level of incompetence, unprofessionalism, and lack of accountability will ruin the Premier League in the long run. Why bother watching when refereeing standards are this poor?”
A third user questioned: “Serious foul play? Tripping someone is now serious foul play? What’s happened to football?”
Meanwhile, a fourth complained: “Chelsea have been on the wrong end of some awful decisions this season, but this one for Arsenal is the worst. Just get rid of PGMOL.”
