Liverpool legend Robbie Fowler could be on the verge of taking his first managerial job in England after an unconventional coaching journey with clubs outside Europe.
Having managed teams in Thailand, India, Australia, and most recently Saudi Arabia, Fowler is now considering a return to English football. The 49-year-old’s last position saw him manage Saudi Pro League side Al Qadsiah for just eight games in 2023.
Now, Fowler has expressed interest in leading a major English club with promotion aspirations. Following a disappointing result against Charlton Athletic, which left Bolton Wanderers ninth in the League One table, the club parted ways with manager Ian Evatt.
After narrowly missing out on promotion via the play-offs last season, Bolton remains focused on returning to the Championship. However, they felt Evatt was not the right person to guide them there, opening the door for Fowler.
According to The Mirror, Fowler is eager to prove he can replicate his on-field success as a manager. However, he faces competition from other candidates, including former Bolton manager Sam Allardyce, ex-Stoke boss Steven Schumacher, and Rotherham’s Steve Evans.
During his brief stint at Al Qadsiah, Fowler achieved an impressive eight-game unbeaten run before being unexpectedly sacked and replaced by ex-Sevilla and Marseille manager Michel. Reflecting on the experience, Fowler revealed to The National News that he believed the club made a mistake by letting him go.
“They just wanted to go down a different pathway,” Fowler said, explaining that the Spanish sporting director preferred a different style. “I was very disappointed because my record was unbelievable. We were second, just one point behind the leaders, and I genuinely believed we could’ve gone the full season undefeated.”
Fowler now hopes to translate that confidence into success at Bolton or another English club, marking a significant step in his managerial career.
