Arsenal are reportedly in advanced discussions to derail Manchester City’s efforts to secure their fourth signing of the January transfer window, according to David Ornstein.
City have already finalized deals for Omar Marmoush, Vitor Reis, and Abdukodir Khusanov, spending over £100 million in total. Despite their domestic struggles, currently sitting fifth in the league, and their need to beat Club Brugge to reach the Champions League play-offs, City have been actively pursuing further reinforcements.
One of their targets, 18-year-old Norwegian midfielder Sverre Halseth Nypan, has been linked with a move to Manchester. Fabrizio Romano reports that Nypan is set to travel to Manchester for discussions over a potential transfer, with City planning to loan him to Girona for the rest of the season.
However, Ornstein claims Arsenal have now entered the race, opening negotiations with Nypan’s current club, Rosenborg. Talks are reportedly progressing, with Arsenal aiming to integrate the talented midfielder into their first team immediately. Nypan, capable of playing in multiple midfield roles, would cost around £10 million due to his contract expiring in 18 months.
Nypan has previously drawn attention, having faced Manchester United in a friendly last summer. The teenager, a self-confessed United fan, was linked with the club, though they are reportedly not pursuing him.
While City are eyeing Nypan as their fourth January addition, Arsenal and United have yet to make any permanent signings this window. United have submitted a €30 million bid for Lecce wing-back Patrick Dorgu, while Arsenal’s primary focus appears to be a summer move for Real Sociedad midfielder Martin Zubimendi, who has a £51 million release clause.
