Merson has advised Arsenal to avoid overspending on a temporary striker and instead focus on securing Wolves forward Matheus Cunha. Arsenal, forced to explore the January transfer market due to Gabriel Jesus’ season-ending injury, are actively seeking reinforcements, as confirmed by manager Mikel Arteta.

Arteta is looking to bolster support for Kai Havertz as the club eyes a potential title push in the latter half of the season. Arsenal has been linked with several high-profile forwards, including Alexander Isak, Victor Osimhen, Viktor Gyokeres, and Benjamin Sesko. However, with time running out, Cunha has emerged as a key target.

Nottingham Forest is also reportedly considering a bid for the Brazilian forward, whose performances have recently come under scrutiny from Wolves’ new manager, Vitor Pereira. Speaking on Sky Sports, Merson advocated for Arsenal to make a move for Cunha, describing him as a long-term solution.

“When you buy a striker in January, it’s not just for six months but for the next four to five years,” Merson said. “I’d go and get Cunha because he’s an all-around player who can contribute for years to come.”

Merson also urged Arsenal not to rush into expensive decisions, adding: “If Liverpool wins their game in hand, Arsenal would be around ten points behind. There’s no need to panic and spend £70-80m on a striker now. Save your resources and target the right player in the summer.”
