Jamie Carragher has called on Liverpool to make a crucial signing following their 1-1 draw with Nottingham Forest.
Arne Slot’s team had to fight back after conceding an early goal to Chris Wood, who netted his 13th Premier League goal of the season after being set up by Anthony Elanga.
Despite an impressive five-save performance from Forest goalkeeper Matz Sels, Liverpool managed to equalize through substitute Diogo Jota, who scored with a close-range header.
Although the draw kept Liverpool seven points ahead in the title race with a game in hand, Carragher believes defensive reinforcements are essential in the January transfer window.
Reacting to the game on X, Carragher wrote: “Liverpool should’ve won tonight, but they continue to create big chances even in the games they don’t win. However, the defensive solidity they had at the start of the season has gone. Always look likely to concede. Buy a defender!!!!”
Liverpool have conceded 20 goals in 20 Premier League games, a record only bettered by Arsenal in third place, but they have kept just one clean sheet in their last seven matches.
Carragher’s concerns may hold weight when considering the ongoing contract uncertainties surrounding Virgil van Dijk and Trent Alexander-Arnold.
Reflecting on the match, Slot spoke to TNT Sport (via The Telegraph), highlighting Liverpool’s performance and challenges against a strong Forest defense:
“You need to be lucky with substitutions. We know Jota can score, and Kostas has a good set-piece. Their goalkeeper made some incredible saves, and their defenders blocked almost every shot. Not many teams can create as many chances against a defensively strong side, but we couldn’t find the second goal.”
He added: “Every time you get the ball, you have to bypass 11 players. They defend deep, with good defenders and a strong goalkeeper. That’s why I’m pleased with our second-half performance. Forest defended well, but we created more chances than the last time we faced them.”
Slot concluded by emphasizing the importance of maintaining their second-half performances moving forward: “Winning in the second half of the season is harder than in the first, but if we continue performing like we did in the second half, we won’t have to settle for draws.”
