Jürgen Klopp has expressed his willingness to personally intervene to help Liverpool secure contract extensions for three of their key players.
After nine years as Liverpool’s manager, Klopp announced his departure at the end of the 2023/24 season. Following his exit, the German coach took a break from football before accepting a role as Head of Global Soccer at Red Bull in October.
In his first press conference in the new position, Klopp shared that he remains closely connected to Liverpool and is ready to use his influence to encourage the club to extend the contracts of its star players.
Currently, Mohamed Salah, Virgil van Dijk, and Trent Alexander-Arnold are all set to leave Liverpool this summer when their contracts expire. While Liverpool is reportedly eager to secure new deals with the trio, no agreements have been finalized.
Klopp, though happy to be removed from the direct decision-making process, hinted that he might personally reach out to the players to persuade them to stay.
“I’m so glad I’m not the one handling those questions now. Good luck to those who are,” Klopp said. “From my perspective, I’d love all three to extend. I don’t know their plans, but I might text them.”
When specifically asked about Salah, who is having one of his best seasons with Liverpool, Klopp had high praise.
“I hope he stays,” he said. “He’s Liverpool’s best striker in modern times, and they’ve had many great ones. A fantastic player, a true professional, and an incredible ambassador for Egypt.”
Klopp also revealed that he keeps in regular contact with several Liverpool players and current manager Arne Slot. He expressed his delight at the team’s success in his absence.
“I’m so happy they’re doing well,” Klopp said. “I stay in touch with Arne and some of the players. I watch as many games as I can. Even if you don’t support Liverpool, you should watch—they’re playing some of the best, most balanced football in the world right now. I’m really proud of that.”
