The English Football Association has decided not to charge Manchester United over a controversial social media post following their FA Cup win against Arsenal.
United faced Arsenal in the third round of the FA Cup at the Emirates Stadium on Sunday night. The game ended 1-1 after 120 minutes, with goals from Bruno Fernandes and Gabriel Magalhaes. Ruben Amorim’s side eventually triumphed in a tense penalty shootout, with goalkeeper Altay Bayindir saving Kai Havertz’s crucial penalty.
After the match, United’s official social media account posted the word “Justice,” which quickly went viral. Some fans speculated the post referred to the contentious penalty awarded to Arsenal after Harry Maguire was adjudged to have fouled Havertz in the box. Replays, however, suggested minimal contact.
According to The Times journalist Martyn Ziegler, the FA has opted not to pursue disciplinary action against United over the tweet.
United’s victory sets up a fourth-round tie against Leicester City at Old Trafford.
Reflecting on the win, manager Ruben Amorim said: “We had the feeling that everything would be okay. Even after the penalty, I felt confident, and I think Arsenal maybe sensed it wasn’t their day. I’m pleased with how we controlled the game without the ball and our strength in set-pieces.”
He added: “The team spirit was incredible, even with 10 men. The connection between the players on the pitch and the fans was fantastic, and I think we’re building something strong.”
United now turn their attention to the Premier League, where they face bottom-placed Southampton at Old Trafford on Thursday night.
