Manchester United advanced to the fourth round of the FA Cup on Sunday, aided by an “all-time horrific” penalty shootout performance from Arsenal goalkeeper David Raya.
Ruben Amorim’s team put up a valiant fight, playing with 10 men for an hour, and ultimately triumphed 5-3 in a penalty shootout after an intense 1-1 draw during regular time.
Bruno Fernandes, United’s reliable penalty taker, opened the shootout by sending Raya the wrong way with a precise strike. Arsenal captain Martin Ødegaard, who missed a penalty earlier in the game, equalized at 1-1, but Raya was outmaneuvered again by defender Lisandro Martínez.
The shootout took a decisive turn when Kai Havertz missed his penalty, allowing United’s summer signing, Leny Yoro, to extend their lead. Yoro delivered confidently, but his penalty gained attention online not for the goal itself but for Raya’s questionable technique.
In footage shared on social media, Raya is seen diving early to his left, well before Yoro struck the ball, leaving fans baffled.
Reactions poured in online, with one user comparing it to a video game error: “This looks like EA FC 25 when you’ve already committed to one side and dive before the ball is kicked.” Another added: “Kane literally said he stuttered his run-up because Raya moves early, and he’s still doing it.” A third fan remarked: “I’ve never seen a worse goalkeeping display in a shootout.”
The match at the Emirates was dramatic from start to finish. Bruno Fernandes gave United a 1-0 lead with a stunning goal, but the tide turned after Diogo Dalot received a red card for a late challenge on Mikel Merino. Arsenal equalized through a deflected strike by Gabriel Magalhães and seemed poised to dominate against 10-man United.
However, United’s resilience shone through, with backup goalkeeper Altay Bayındır making crucial saves, including denying Ødegaard after Havertz won a controversial penalty. Bayındır’s heroics starkly contrasted Raya’s struggles during the decisive shootout.
