Liverpool winger Federico Chiesa scored his maiden Reds goal in the FA Cup win over Accrington Stanley, but Arne Slot has told fans they shouldn’t be getting carried away
Arne Slot has told Liverpool fans not to get “carried away” after Federico Chiesa scored his first goal for the club.
The £10million Italian was making only his fifth Liverpool appearance when he came on as a half-time substitute in the 4-0 FA Cup win over Accrington Stanley at Anfield. And Chiesa, 27, capped a lively cameo with a 90th minute strike.
But Slot said: “It is definitely a good first step, but as much as I liked the way Accrington Stanley played we have to take into consideration that we’re talking about League Two level.
“It is good to have him back on the pitch. He was a threat, but let’s not get carried away.”
With the level of opposition in mind, Slot’s line-up included 16-year-old Rio Ngumoha, who became Liverpool’s youngest-ever starter.
“It is a special day for him,” said Slot. “He did well. There were a few moments where the fans could see why we think he’s a talent. The fans liked what they saw.”
And the fans liked a sensational strike from Trent Alexander-Arnold that put Liverpool two ahead just before half-time. Slot said: “Trent didn’t have his best game against Manchester United but for the rest of the season he has been so good for us – I liked his performance today.
“I could talk for hours about the goal, unbelievable. It was good to play in our stadium and feel the reception of the fans. That can only help him and us. If you want to do special things this season, you can do that together.
“Our fans have always given him a lot of support. Every player around the world, except a few, has a bad game and that is completely normal, but the moment Trent has one, everyone has an opinion about it.
“And perhaps that is the biggest compliment you can get.”
