Robbie Fowler issued a harsh critique of a Liverpool star following their dominant 4-0 victory over Accrington Stanley in the FA Cup.
The Reds advanced to the fourth round after goals from Diogo Jota, Trent Alexander-Arnold, Jayden Danns, and Federico Chiesa sealed a comfortable win at Anfield.
Despite the comprehensive result, Darwin Nunez’s performance came under scrutiny from both fans and pundits. While he provided the assist for Jota’s opener, his overall display left much to be desired.
Speaking before the match on ITV, Fowler shared his doubts about the 25-year-old striker. “We’re still saying the same things about him as we were two or three years ago: he’s raw, he’s this, he’s that. You can’t keep using those excuses,” Fowler said. “For me, the more I watch him, the more I think he’s not a Liverpool player.”
He continued: “People might criticize me for saying this because he works hard, but working hard should be a given. You’re at Liverpool to score goals. I know fans love him for his effort, but at this level, you’ve got to perform better and deliver more in a Liverpool shirt.”
When asked what Nunez is lacking, Fowler responded: “It’s about speed of thought, particularly when it comes to finishing. He’s physically quick, we know that, but as a striker, your decision-making has to be quicker than anyone else’s.”
After the match, Fowler praised Jayden Danns’ movement for his goal, suggesting Nunez could learn from the 18-year-old. Analyzing Danns’ strike, Fowler said, “That’s what I like about him—his attitude is brilliant.”
Highlighting Danns’ darting run into the box after passing to Chiesa, Fowler added, “What I love about him—and something Nunez could take note of—is his desire to get back into the box. Nunez often plays the ball and then hangs back, but Danns showed the kind of hunger you need.”
Nunez has struggled this season, scoring just four goals in 25 appearances across all competitions. Amid speculation about his future, the striker has been linked with a potential move away from Liverpool during the January transfer window.
