Robbie Fowler sparked outrage with a controversial remark ahead of Liverpool’s third-round FA Cup match against Accrington Stanley at Anfield on Saturday afternoon.
Fowler, 49, was part of ITV’s broadcast team alongside Karen Carney and Mark Pougatch.
He made the comment while discussing the need for Liverpool forward Darwin Nunez to improve, saying, “For me, the more I see him, the more I think he’s not a Liverpool player.”
“People might criticize me for saying that,” Fowler continued. “You’re not bringing in a player just because he works hard. You need someone who can score goals. I know he’s a fan favorite because of his effort, but he has to do better in that Liverpool shirt.”
Fowler went on to say, “I don’t think he’s quick enough in his thought, especially when it comes to finishing. He’s fast on the ground, but his mental speed needs to be quicker, particularly as a striker. When he has time to think, he struggles. When he acts instinctively, it’s a little better, but still not quite enough. His thought process, especially in terms of positioning and finishing, needs improvement.”
In response to Carney’s joke about the club asking Fowler to help Nunez, considering his status as Liverpool’s seventh all-time top scorer, Fowler’s reply drew backlash from fans.
“No… I’m one of these unemployed scousers; you don’t get many of us about, do you?” Fowler quipped.
Fans quickly reacted negatively to his comment on X, with one person saying, “Robbie Fowler jokes he is an unemployed scouser… whilst working for ITV. Idiot.” Another wrote, “Fowler can f**k off with the unemployment joke.” A third commenter questioned, “What the hell was that from Robbie Fowler?” and a fourth criticized, “Robbie Fowler making an unemployment joke at the expense of Liverpool.”
