Jamie Carragher doesn’t believe Mohamed Salah deserves a spot in the 2024 Team of the Year despite his outstanding form this season, opting instead for Lamine Yamal.
Carragher has previously sparked controversy with his comments about Salah’s public discussions regarding his future at Liverpool. With the Egyptian’s contract nearing its final six months and no new deal in sight, Salah has playfully joked that Carragher is “obsessed” with him, to which Carragher has responded that he’s happy to keep the obsession going for another year.
Given Salah’s impressive record of 20 goals and 17 assists in 26 matches before the turn of the year, Carragher’s decision to leave him out of his EA SPORTS FC 25 Team of the Year came as a surprise. Instead, Carragher chose 16-year-old Barcelona talent Lamine Yamal, a choice that puzzled colleague Gary Neville.
Neville questioned Carragher, asking if the omission was due to Salah’s recent comments about possibly leaving Liverpool. Carragher responded, explaining that he picked Yamal because of his remarkable performances, particularly his standout role in Spain’s European Championship victory. He expressed his belief that Yamal has the potential to become one of the game’s greats, comparing him to legends like Messi and Ronaldo.
Carragher acknowledged that while Salah has been outstanding in the first half of the 2024/25 season, his performance in the latter part of 2023 and Egypt’s early exit from the Africa Cup of Nations played a part in his decision. He argued that Yamal’s triumph at the European Championship tipped the scale in his favor, despite Neville’s argument that Salah’s overall productivity was unmatched.
