Arsenal suffered a 2-0 defeat at the Emirates Stadium, giving Newcastle a significant advantage heading into the second leg of the Carabao Cup semi-final at St. James’ Park.
Manager Mikel Arteta remains confident his team can turn the tie around, though he partly blamed the loss on the competition’s Puma match ball, which he said differs from the one used in the Premier League.
“It’s only half-time,” Arteta stated. “When I see how we played and handled many situations against a strong team, I’m confident we can overturn the result. The game didn’t reflect the scoreline—Newcastle were highly efficient with their chances, while we weren’t.”
Newcastle striker Alexander Isak was instrumental, scoring one goal and contributing to Anthony Gordon’s effort, marking his 50th goal for the club since joining in 2022. Gordon praised Isak, calling him “the best center forward in Europe right now.” Newcastle manager Eddie Howe also lauded Isak’s performance, highlighting his pace and movement as key to the team’s success.
“When Alex is in that mood, as he was in the first half, he’s an exceptional player for us,” Howe said. The victory brings Newcastle closer to their first major trophy in 56 years.
Arsenal, reportedly interested in signing Isak, may face difficulties with Newcastle reportedly valuing the striker at £150m. Commenting on Isak’s impact, Arteta said, “He didn’t create many chances, but his involvement in both goals showed his quality. That kind of clinical finishing makes the difference.”
The Gunners are looking to strengthen their attack after mixed results, including a draw with Brighton and the defeat to Newcastle. They now face a tough FA Cup tie against Manchester United this weekend.
Addressing concerns about fatigue, Arteta dismissed them as an excuse. “If we lose or draw, it’s going to be attributed to that, but it’s not something I want to focus on. The players are tireless and give everything in every action. We have big games ahead, and the team is determined to deliver.”
