It appears that one of Newcastle United’s longest-serving players may have played his final game for the club.
On Tuesday night, the Magpies secured an impressive 2-0 victory over Arsenal in the first leg of their Carabao Cup semi-final, with goals from Alexander Isak and Anthony Gordon. Eddie Howe’s side delivered a solid performance, maintaining a clean sheet at the Emirates Stadium, thanks in part to veteran goalkeeper Martin Dubravka.
Dubravka has stepped up since first-choice keeper Nick Pope suffered a knee injury last month, playing a key role in Newcastle’s strong form across all competitions. The 35-year-old has been in excellent form, recording four consecutive clean sheets. However, his time at St James’ Park could be nearing its end, as he has reportedly agreed to join Saudi Pro League club Al Shabab.
According to journalist Ben Jacobs, a deal with Al Shabab is “close” but not yet finalized. Newcastle could still attempt to convince Dubravka to stay, given Eddie Howe’s high regard for him, though Al Shabab reportedly remain confident of completing the transfer after weeks of negotiations.
After Tuesday’s match, the Slovakian goalkeeper was visibly emotional, applauding fans who had traveled to London.
As for a replacement, Newcastle are reportedly interested in Burnley goalkeeper James Trafford. The club previously made a £16 million bid for the England international in the summer, though Burnley were holding out for £20 million. Newcastle now believe they have a better chance of securing Trafford during this transfer window, according to Football Insider.
Trafford, who joined Burnley from Manchester City in 2023 for £15 million, has also attracted interest from Chelsea, Liverpool, and Bayern Munich. Initially viewed as a competitor for Pope rather than a direct replacement, he may now be in line to fill Dubravka’s spot.
