Arsenal’s season appears to be unraveling after conceding two goals to Newcastle in the first leg of their Carabao Cup semi-final at home.
With the Premier League title race already slipping away, the Gunners now face a daunting challenge to turn things around in the cup. Despite a promising start, Mikel Arteta’s side fell behind when Alexander Isak struck, shifting momentum firmly in Newcastle’s favor. Anthony Gordon then added a second, leaving Arsenal on the brink of elimination with just 90 minutes remaining in the tie.
The loss highlighted several issues, prompting Daily Star Sport to examine where Arteta may have gone wrong on a cold evening in north London.
Isak too difficult to handle
Criticism of Arsenal’s defenders may feel harsh given Alexander Isak’s current form. The Swedish striker was at his best again, powering Newcastle into the lead in the first half. Even William Saliba and Gabriel—two of the league’s most reliable center-backs—were unable to stop him. Reports suggest Arteta may even be considering a move for Isak in the future.
Dominance in midfield but no finishing touch
Before Isak’s opener, Arsenal controlled the midfield with their strongest trio: Declan Rice, Thomas Partey, and Martin Odegaard. A brilliant passing sequence reminiscent of the Arsène Wenger era set up Gabriel Martinelli with a one-on-one opportunity, but the Brazilian was denied by the woodwork. Failing to capitalize on such chances proved costly.
Letting Newcastle take control
Arsenal needed to score the next goal to stay in the match, but it was Newcastle who struck again. Isak’s quick reaction led to a rebound that Anthony Gordon slotted home. Adding insult to injury, Gordon celebrated in a Thierry Henry-style pose, mocking Arsenal’s past glories.
Slow to make tactical changes
Arteta’s hesitation to make changes at halftime drew criticism from fans. With the game slipping away, Arsenal needed fresh ideas, but substitutions came too late. One frustrated fan remarked, “Arteta is lost tactically right now. Nothing to offer. Scared to change the shape of his struggling team.” Another added, “Tonight was my last straw. Until Arteta makes serious changes, I can’t watch this anymore.”
The Gunners now face an uphill battle to salvage their cup hopes in the second leg at St. James’ Park.
