Arsenal has recalled Charles Sagoe Jr from his loan spell at Shrewsbury Town due to limited playing opportunities, but it seems unlikely that the young winger will step in as a temporary replacement for the injured Bukayo Saka.
The 20-year-old, who joined Arsenal’s academy in 2015 after a stint at Fulham, signed his first professional contract with the Gunners in 2023 and made his senior debut in a Carabao Cup match against Brentford. Despite his potential, Sagoe Jr has struggled to make a significant impact during his loan at Shrewsbury, featuring in 18 matches and accumulating just 852 minutes across all competitions without scoring or assisting. This lack of game time likely prompted Arsenal’s decision to recall him.
Saka, meanwhile, is expected to be out for two months following surgery for a hamstring injury sustained during Arsenal’s 5-1 victory over Crystal Palace. However, Arsenal has sufficient internal options to cover for Saka’s absence, including Leandro Trossard and Gabriel Martinelli. Additionally, the club may use the January transfer window to explore external options, with players like Athletic Bilbao’s Nico Williams and West Ham’s Mohammed Kudus reportedly on their radar.
While Sagoe Jr is back at the Emirates, it is anticipated that Arsenal will seek another loan move to provide him with more regular playing time and aid his development.
