Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes admitted feeling “upset” after Sunday’s draw against Premier League leaders Liverpool, despite it being one of the team’s strongest performances this season.
United entered the Anfield clash following a dismal December, losing six of ten matches across all competitions, including five of seven in the Premier League. Given Liverpool’s dominance at home and in Europe, as well as their 3-0 win at Old Trafford earlier in the season, many expected United’s poor form to continue.
However, Lisandro Martinez gave Ruben Amorim’s side a second-half lead. Although Liverpool responded with two goals to go ahead, Amad Diallo’s equalizer secured a well-deserved point for United. Fernandes expressed frustration at the lack of consistency from the squad, especially after recent strong performances, such as their win against Manchester City.
“It’s a really good result,” Fernandes told Sky Sports. “We could have even won at the end. It’s fair, but I’m upset because if we can show this against Liverpool, why can’t we do it every week? Finally, I had a proper all-around performance. We need much more from ourselves to achieve more this season.”
Looking ahead, Fernandes said he is more “worried” about facing struggling Southampton in the Premier League than Arsenal in the FA Cup, given United’s inconsistency.
“It’s been there, but it hasn’t shown until today,” he said. “Now we face Arsenal in the FA Cup, which will be tough, but we want to reach that final again. I’ll probably be more worried about Southampton after this performance against Liverpool.”
Manager Ruben Amorim echoed Fernandes’ sentiments, admitting the team’s performance at Anfield made him “more frustrated because of the other games.”
