Footage of the Anfield pitch has surfaced ahead of Liverpool’s Sunday afternoon clash with Manchester United, following heavy snow and freezing rain in Merseyside.
The game, scheduled for a 4:30 pm kickoff, is under threat of postponement due to adverse weather conditions overnight. A Safety Advisory Group met at 9 am on Sunday to assess the situation but postponed a final decision until 11:45 am.
At 9:31 am, Liverpool issued a statement confirming that the match was still planned to proceed as scheduled, adding, “Every effort is being made to get the game on. A further safety meeting will take place again at midday to assess the latest conditions.”
Shortly after, Sky Sports reporter Vinny O’Connor shared a video showing the condition of the Anfield pitch, noting, “Pitch shouldn’t be an issue. Weather still not great though!”
The footage sparked significant debate online, with fans sharing mixed reactions about the match’s status. One commented, “Raining too, should be absolutely fine for the game to continue,” while another remarked, “Vinny, it’s forecast to rain, and the club have said that it’s going ahead as it stands.”
Some fans criticized the situation, with one stating, “Can’t believe they expect us all to work in this weather but need meetings to decide if people can go to a football stadium.” Another added, “Undersoil heating proving pointless now if a bit of snow outside can put a match in danger.”
Heavy snow also led to runway closures at Manchester, Liverpool John Lennon, Leeds Bradford, and Birmingham airports on Sunday morning.
Manchester United also released a statement, confirming, “Our match against Liverpool is set to still go ahead at this stage, despite snow and weather warnings in the North West today. Take care if you are travelling to the game — we will update you with the latest developments.”
