Fabrizio Romano provided an update on Manchester City’s interest in signing Atalanta’s Ederson in the January transfer window through his exclusive GIVEMESPORT newsletter.
Manchester City is currently experiencing their worst-ever season under Pep Guardiola, with only two wins in their last 14 matches across all competitions, leading to speculation about squad changes in 2025. Guardiola has expressed a desire to bring in new players during the winter transfer window.
Romano stated that signing Ederson would be challenging. The Brazilian star, playing for Serie A club Atalanta, has attracted interest from both City and Manchester United, with reports suggesting a £41.5m move could be in the works. However, Romano noted that this fee would not be enough, and securing a deal in January is “more than complicated.” He added that Atalanta sources have confirmed that the reported €50m fee would fall short, and although Ederson is on the radar of several clubs, a move in January seems unlikely.
In addition to Ederson, City’s transfer plans include strengthening their midfield, as Ilkay Gundogan, who rejoined the club from Barcelona, has struggled to replicate his previous form. Rodri’s knee injury has disrupted the team’s balance, while key players like Kevin De Bruyne, Phil Foden, Bernardo Silva, and Matheus Nunes have all faced fitness or form issues. The club is also interested in bringing in a new defender and forward, but midfield reinforcements are considered the priority. However, if the Ederson deal proves too difficult, City may need to pursue other targets or pay a premium to secure his services.
